What Is a Summative Test in the MATATAG Curriculum?
Under the MATATAG curriculum implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd), classroom assessment has been restructured to reflect a three-term school year. This means that instead of the traditional quarterly system, the school year is now divided into three terms, each with its own set of summative assessments and a term examination.
A Summative Test is a written assessment given at specific intervals within a term to measure how much students have learned from the lessons covered during that period. For Grade 5, which belongs to Key Stage 2, summative tests follow a standardized format:
Assessment Detail | Standard |
Grade Level | Grade 5 (Key Stage 2) |
Number of Items per Summative Test | Up to 20 items |
Term Examination Total Items | 40 items |
Answer Key Format | Key to Correction (letter answers) |
Coverage | Competencies taught during the specific weeks covered |
Important: According to DepEd’s assessment guidelines, the number of questions in a Summative Test should not exceed half of the total number of items in the Term Examination for the same Key Stage. Since the Term Examination for Grade 5 has 40 items, each Summative Test is limited to 20 questions.
This structure ensures that summative tests remain focused, manageable, and aligned with what was actually taught — not bloated with items that go beyond the lesson coverage for that period.

Why Use Teacher-Made Summative Tests with TOS?
Some teachers prefer to use commercially printed tests or rely on what’s shared in their department group chats. While that’s understandable given the workload, using a teacher-made test backed by a TOS offers several advantages:
- Alignment with what you actually taught. A good summative test only covers competencies that were taught during the relevant period. A TOS keeps you accountable for this.
- It’s defensible. When your principal or master teacher asks why a certain item was included, your TOS gives you a clear, documented answer.
- Better data for intervention. When your test is structured according to Bloom’s levels, item analysis becomes more meaningful. You can identify not just who failed, but at what cognitive level your learners are struggling.
- It supports the assessment calendar. Under the MATATAG curriculum, formative and summative assessments must follow the school’s Assessment Calendar. Having your tests ready in advance helps you stay on schedule.
- It reduces bias. A TOS ensures that no single topic dominates the test unfairly, and that items are weighted according to how much instructional time was spent on each lesson.
