If you teach Grades 4, 5, or 6, you already know that a pupil who is anxious, left out, or angry at a seatmate is not going to focus on fractions or reading comprehension. That is the practical reason behind socio-emotional learning (SEL).

This guide explains how SEL fits into the DepEd Key Stage 2 classroom. It also gives you a free, ready-to-use SEL module you can download, print, and start using this week.

Good news: Everything on this website is free. You can download the Socio-Emotional Learning Module for Key Stage 2 at no cost, with no registration. The download link is in the Free Download section below.

What Is Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is the process of helping learners understand and manage their emotions, show care for others, build healthy relationships, and make responsible choices. Most frameworks, including CASEL’s, organize SEL into five competencies:

  1. Self-awareness: recognizing your emotions, strengths, and limits
  2. Self-management: handling stress, impulses, and goals
  3. Social awareness: understanding and respecting others
  4. Relationship skills: communicating, cooperating, resolving conflict
  5. Responsible decision-making: making safe, ethical, thoughtful choices

In simple terms, SEL teaches children to know themselves, care for others, and choose well.

Why SEL Matters for Filipino Learners

SEL is not a foreign add-on. It connects directly to concerns Filipino teachers face every day.

  • Bullying. A news report on DepEd’s mental health program noted that DepEd monitored physical bullying in the majority of the 7,742 cases logged in school year 2022–2023. asianews
  • A Filipino SEL framework exists. The Filipino SEL competency framework was developed by ChildFund Philippines. A later publication, ExSELLEnT, a contextualized SEL competency framework for Filipino learners, was produced by DepEd, ChildFund Philippines, and SEAMEO INNOTECH. asianewsseameo
  • MATATAG puts socio-emotional development in the picture. The curriculum’s stated goals include balancing cognitive skills with emotional maturity. slideshare
  • Teachers are being trained. One regional memorandum announced self-paced modules on building caring school communities through SEL-driven school leadership, available through the NEAP LMS portal. depeddasma

Put simply, SEL is moving from “nice to have” to something teachers are expected to practice.

How SEL Connects to GMRC and Values Education

Much of what we call SEL is already part of Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education under MATATAG. GMRC and Values Education is a core subject in the K to 12 basic education program, grounded in Republic Act 11476. deped

You do not need a separate subject period to teach SEL. You can weave it into GMRC, homeroom, English, and Araling Panlipunan.

Where It Fits in Daily Teaching

Self-management

  • Grade 5: Add written reflection and partner discussions. Introduce the idea that one feeling can have several causes.
  • Grade 6: Include perspective-taking, peer pressure scenarios, and early conversations about social media and online behavior.

5 Classroom-Tested SEL Activities You Can Use Tomorrow

  1. Feelings Check-In Wall. Each pupil places a name card on a color-coded feelings chart when they arrive. It takes two minutes and shows you who needs attention.
  2. The Calm Corner. Set aside a small space with a breathing guide and a few quiet activities. Teach pupils that going there is a skill, not a punishment.
  3. Kindness Chain. Whenever a pupil is seen doing something kind, add a paper link to a class chain. Watch it grow across the week.
  4. “I-Message” Practice. Teach the sentence frame “I feel ___ when ___ because ___.” Practice it in pairs before using it in real conflicts.
  5. Problem-Solving Circle. When a conflict happens, gather the class (or the involved pupils) and walk through: What happened? How did people feel? What can we do next time?

Teacher tip: Do the activity yourself first. If you model how you handle frustration, such as saying “I’m feeling stressed, so I’m taking a breath,” pupils learn more than they would from any worksheet.
