Socio-Emotional Learning Module for DepEd Key Stage 4 (Grades 11–12): Free Download and Teacher’s Guide

Think about your Grade 11 and 12 learners for a moment. They’re juggling research papers, work immersion, college or job decisions, family expectations, and a phone that never stops buzzing. Some of them are quietly carrying more than we know.

That’s why a Socio-Emotional Learning module for DepEd Key Stage 4 matters. Academic content alone doesn’t get a learner through these two years. They also need the skills to manage stress, work with others, make sound choices, and understand themselves.

This guide walks you through what SEL looks like at Key Stage 4, how it fits into DepEd’s direction, and how to use a ready-made module in your class. And the best part: you can download the module for free at the end of this post.

What Is Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Socio-emotional learning is the process of building the skills people use to understand and manage their emotions, set goals, show empathy, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Most SEL programs worldwide build on the framework of CASEL (the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), which names five core competencies:

  1. Self-awareness: knowing your emotions, strengths, limits, and values
  2. Self-management: handling stress, impulses, and goals
  3. Social awareness: empathy and respect for others, including those from different backgrounds
  4. Relationship skills: communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution
  5. Responsible decision-making: weighing choices and consequences ethically

In short: SEL is not a “special subject.” It’s a set of life skills you can teach inside the lessons you already have.

Why SEL Matters at the Senior High School Level

Younger learners often need help naming feelings. Senior High School learners need help applying those skills to high-stakes situations. Here’s what that looks like in real classrooms:

  • Academic pressure: deadlines, research defense, performance tasks, and board-style exams
  • Career uncertainty: “Am I in the right strand? What happens after graduation?”
  • Peer and relationship stress: friendships, dating, group conflict, and social media comparison
  • Family and financial concerns: many learners work part-time or help at home
  • Online behavior: cyberbullying, oversharing, and digital reputation

Studies of school-based SEL programs, including large meta-analyses, point to gains in academic performance, social behavior, and emotional well-being. For SHS learners, that can mean better focus, fewer conflicts in group work, and stronger readiness for the workplace.

SEL and DepEd: The Policy Context

SEL isn’t something you’re adding on your own. It lines up with several DepEd and national priorities:

  • ExSELLEnT framework (2025): a contextualized SEL competency framework for Filipino learners, developed by DepEd, ChildFund Philippines, and SEAMEO INNOTECH.
  • Child Protection Policy (DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2012): SEL skills support a safer, more respectful school climate.
  • Anti-Bullying Act (RA 10627) and its implementing rules: SEL builds the empathy and conflict skills that prevention depends on.
  • Mental Health Act (RA 11036) and the basic education mental health law (RA 12080): schools are expected to promote learner well-being.
  • MATATAG curriculum: it puts strong emphasis on socio-emotional development in the early grades, and teachers across levels continue to be encouraged to build these skills.

Teacher tip: Documenting your SEL activities (photos of outputs, reflection sheets, attendance in sessions) can support your portfolio, your school’s learner-support reports, and your MOVs.

Yes. The activities are general enough to adapt to Academic, TVL, Arts and Design, and Sports tracks. Swap in examples from your strand to make them more relevant.

How long does it take to finish the module?

It depends on how you schedule it. You can run one activity a week, or spend a short block each day during homeroom or advisory.
