What Is the ARAL Program?
ARAL stands for Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning. It is a free national learning intervention program meant to help struggling learners catch up with the standards for their grade level. It was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 12028, which gives reading and mathematics priority in the program. mbbatasnatin
The program started with Reading. DepEd said that later phases would add ARAL-Mathematics for Grades 1–10, ARAL-Science for Grades 3–10, and ARAL-Summer Programs. That’s why ARAL-Math is now a major focus for schools. tribune
Quick Facts About ARAL-Math
Item | Details |
Legal basis | RA 12028 (ARAL Program Act) and DepEd Order No. 18, s. 2025 |
Math coverage | Grades 1 to 10 |
Who tutors | Teachers, para-teachers, and pre-service teachers |
Who is covered | Learners below minimum proficiency, those failing during the school year, and those returning to school after a break |
2026 funding | The 2026 national budget set aside P8.9 billion for ARAL, with about 8.08 million learners expected to benefit in Mathematics thepost |
What Are ARAL Math Materials?
ARAL Math materials are the learning resources used during ARAL tutorial sessions. According to DepEd’s orientation on learning resources, the available ARAL-Mathematics resources for Grades 1–10 are activity plans/worksheets and answer keys.
In simple terms, you get two things:
- Activity plans, which tell the tutor what to teach and how to run the session
- Worksheets with answer keys, which let learners practice and let you check their work quickly
Because they’re meant for tutorials, these aren’t full lesson exemplars. They are short, focused, and aimed at specific competencies that learners failed to master.
Why ARAL Math Materials Are Different From Regular Lesson Plans
Many teachers try to use their daily lesson plans for ARAL sessions. It rarely works well, and here’s why.
Regular Math Lesson | ARAL Math Tutorial Session |
Follows the curriculum sequence | Targets specific learning gaps |
Whole class, mixed abilities | Small group of learners with similar needs |
Introduces new topics | Re-teaches and reinforces missed competencies |
Wide coverage | Narrow focus, deep practice |
Graded for the quarter | Used to track recovery and progress |
The takeaway: ARAL materials should be short, scaffolded, and heavy on guided practice.
Common Learning Gaps ARAL Math Materials Should Address
From the ARAL-related intervention plans teachers share online, the same weak spots keep showing up. One example is a Grade 9 plan where learners showed misconceptions in ratios and proportions and needed help with problem solving. Here is where gaps usually appear by level.
Grades 1–3 (Foundation)
- Number recognition and place value
- Basic addition and subtraction
- Ordinal numbers and simple money problems
Grades 4–6 (Bridge to Abstract Thinking)
- Multiplication and division fluency
- Fractions and decimals
- Word problems and measurement
Grades 7–10 (Application)
- Integers and operations on algebraic expressions
- Ratio, proportion, and percent
- Linear equations and basic geometry
- Multi-step problem solving
Use this as a checklist when you choose your materials. If your learners are stuck on fractions, a worksheet about decimals won’t help, however nice it looks.

How to Use ARAL Math Materials in a Tutorial Session
Session length and group size depend on your division’s current guidelines, so check those first. Within that time, here is a simple structure that works well for many tutors. It’s a suggested routine, not an official DepEd format.
A Simple Session Flow
Step | What to Do | Suggested Share of Time |
1. Warm-up | A quick mental math drill or review question | Short |
2. Mini-lesson | Re-teach the skill with one concrete example | Short |
3. Guided practice | Solve 2–3 problems together | Longest |
4. Independent practice | Learners answer the worksheet | Medium |
5. Check and reflect | Use the answer key; learners explain one answer | Short |
Practical Tips From the Classroom
- Start with a concrete example. Use coins, paper strips, or counters before going to symbols.
- Let learners explain their thinking. A wrong answer often reveals the exact misconception.
- Keep a simple progress record. A checklist of mastered skills per learner is enough.
- Reuse worksheets in different ways. Make one a game, one a partner activity, one a quiz.
- Don’t rush. Mastering one skill beats touching five.
