What Is the Term 1 Examination for Grade 5?
The Term 1 Examination is the official end-of-term assessment administered after all lessons and summative tests for the first term have been completed. Under the new three-term school calendar introduced by DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026, the school year is now divided into three terms instead of the traditional four quarters — making this exam the equivalent of what many teachers previously called the “First Periodical Test” or “First Quarter Exam.”
For Grade 5 learners (Key Stage 2), the Term Examination consists of 40 multiple-choice items, as prescribed by DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026, which sets the assessment framework and item count guidelines per key stage.
Quick Fact: Under DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026, the Summative Test for Key Stage 2 must not exceed half the total item count of the Term Examination. Since the Term Exam has 40 items, the Summative Tests are capped at 20 items each.
Why You Need a TOS (Table of Specifications)
The Table of Specifications (TOS) is not just a requirement — it’s your blueprint. Here’s why teachers who use a TOS consistently produce better, fairer exams:
- Ensures competency alignment — every item is traced back to a specific learning objective from the Budget of Work (BoW)
- Distributes items fairly across topics and cognitive levels (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing)
- Protects you during inspections — a properly accomplished TOS shows supervisors and school heads that your test is curriculum-based
- Saves time during item analysis — because you already know which competency each item measures
- Supports data-driven instruction — by linking test results back to specific lessons, you can quickly identify which areas need remediation
Without a TOS, even a well-written exam can be questioned for validity and alignment. With one, your assessment becomes a professional, defensible tool.

How to Use the Grade 5 Term 1 Exam Effectively
Downloading the file is just the beginning. Here’s how experienced Grade 5 teachers make the most of these materials:
Before the Exam
- Review the TOS and check if all competencies taught during Term 1 are covered
- Adjust or localize items if your class has specific learning contexts (e.g., a Science item using local examples)
- Print the questionnaire on short bond paper for Key Stage 2 learners
- Prepare the Answer Sheet in advance — the template is included in the package
During the Exam
- Read the instructions aloud for learners who need support
- Remind learners that this is an independent work assessment — no sharing, no gadgets
- Give enough time — 40 items for Grade 5 learners generally takes about 60 to 90 minutes per subject
After the Exam
- Use the Item Analysis Template to check which items were answered incorrectly by most learners
- Items with low scores (below 50% correct) likely need re-teaching or remediation
- Items answered correctly by almost everyone can be flagged for enrichment activities
- Use results to inform your Term 2 lesson planning
