What Is the ILAW Lesson Plan Format?

If you’re still getting used to the new format, here’s the short version. ILAW is DepEd’s lesson planning framework under DepEd Order No. 016, s. 2026 (Guidelines on Lesson Planning and Learning Design). It replaces the old DepEd Order No. 42, s. 2016, and it removes the strict split between a Detailed Lesson Plan and a Daily Lesson Log.

ILAW stands for four parts:

Letter

Part

What it answers

I

Intentions

What should learners be able to do by the end of the lesson?

L

Learning Experience

What activities and resources will get them there?

A

Assessing Learning

How will I know they understood?

W

Ways Forward

What happens next: reteach, enrich, or move on?

A lesson plan is considered sufficient when these four parts are clear and connected to each other. DepEd also stopped regions, divisions, and schools from requiring extra templates beyond this. Fewer forms, more teaching time.

Subject-by-Subject Guide

GMRC 1: Family Prayer and Respect for Differences

Grade 1 learners already see prayer at home in different ways. Some pray before meals, some at bedtime, some at church or in other places of worship. The lesson asks them to name these practices and connect them to gratitude, care, and togetherness.

Teaching tips:

  • Let children share through drawing or pointing if they’re not ready to speak in front of the class.
  • Keep the focus on respect. Learners may come from families with different beliefs, so the goal is to understand, not compare.
  • Close with a simple question: “How do we feel when our family does something together?”

Language 1: Action Words and Describing Words

This is the heart of the week’s oral communication work. A child who can only say “Si Ate” has named someone. A child who says “Si Ate ay nagbabasa” has communicated an idea.

Teaching tips:

  • Start with actions children know: nagluluto, naglalaro, nagliligpit, nagsisipilyo.
  • Use gestures. Act it out, let learners guess, then say the word together.
  • Move in steps: recognize the action, pair it with a person, then say a short sentence (“Ako ay nagbabasa”).
  • Accept a home-language word if a child is stuck, then build from there. Meaning matters more than sentence length.

Makabansa 1: Roles and Responsibilities in the Family

Children explore what different family members do for one another. Parents, guardians, siblings, grandparents, and other relatives all contribute in different ways.

Teaching tips:

  • Use drawings. Ask learners to draw one task they do at home.
  • Avoid assuming a “typical” family. Learners live with parents, grandparents, aunts, or other caregivers, so use inclusive wording like “the grown-ups at home.”
  • Connect to Language: “Who is cooking? What is Lola doing?”

Mathematics 1: Addition Without Regrouping

Learners continue adding numbers with sums up to 100 where no regrouping is needed. The progression is 2-digit + 1-digit first, then 2-digit + 2-digit.

Teaching tips:

  • Use concrete materials first: bundled sticks, counters, or bottle caps grouped in tens and ones.
  • Move to drawings of tens and ones before writing equations.
  • Ask learners to explain: “Which digits did you add first? Why?” Place-value language is the goal, not just the answer.

Example: For 23 + 14, learners show 2 tens and 3 ones, then 1 ten and 4 ones. They combine the tens (3 tens) and the ones (7 ones) to get 37.

Reading and Literacy 1: Story Comprehension

Learners listen to or read short story episodes, then work on three skills: figuring out how a character feels and what they’re like from clues, predicting possible endings, and connecting the story to their own lives.

Teaching tips:

  • Pause mid-story and ask, “How do you think she feels? What tells you that?”
  • Accept oral or picture responses. Grade 1 comprehension doesn’t have to be written.
  • Ask “What would you do?” so children connect the story to their own experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is the ILAW template now required for all Grade 6 teachers? Yes. Per DepEd Order No. 16, s. 2026, full implementation of the ILAW Framework for lesson planning is required starting Term 2 of SY 2026–2027.

Q: Can I still use the old DLL format? No — the transition period allowed teachers to continue using their old formats only through the end of Term 1. From Term 2 onwards, the ILAW format is mandatory.

Q: Do I need to submit the ILAW plan to my school head every week? Submission requirements may vary per school or division, but the plan itself must be completed. Check with your school head or EPS for specific submission schedules in your area.

Q: Can I edit the downloaded files? Absolutely. All files are in editable Word format. Just fill in your school name, grade and section, date, and any adjustments specific to your class context.

Q: What if my school has a modified or division-specific template? Your Division Office may have issued a locally adapted version of the ILAW template. Always check with your school head. However, the content and competencies in our files follow the national MATATAG curriculum, which should still align.

Final Note to Filipino Teachers

Teaching in the Philippine public school system is not easy — and we see you. The shift to ILAW, the new MATATAG Curriculum, the paperwork, the varied learning needs of pupils, and everything else you carry every day — it’s a lot.

These free lesson plan resources are our small way of helping lighten that load. Our goal has always been to give Filipino teachers more time to teach, not just to document.
