What Is the Grade 4 Term 1 Examination?

The Grade 4 Term 1 Examination is the major summative assessment administered at the end of Term 1 under DepEd’s three-term school calendar for SY 2026–2027. This replaces what used to be called the First Periodical Test or 1st Quarter Examination under the old four-quarter system.

Under DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026, the school year is now organized into three terms:

How Many Items Should the Grade 4 Term 1 Examination Have?

This is one of the most common questions teachers ask — and the answer is clearly stated in policy.

Under DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026, the Term Examination for Key Stage 2 (Grades 4, 5, and 6) must have a maximum of 40 items.

This also has a direct effect on your Summative Tests. Since Summative Tests must not exceed half the number of items in the Term Examination for the same key stage:

40 items (Term Exam) ÷ 2 = 20 items maximum per Summative Test

Here’s how the assessment flow looks for Grade 4 Term 1:

Summative Test 1 (Weeks 1–3) → max. 20 items

Summative Test 2 (Weeks 4–6) → max. 20 items

Term 1 Examination (End of Term) → max. 40 items
