What Is a Summative Test in the DepEd Context?

Before we dive into the downloads, let’s quickly clear something up — because the definition of “summative test” has slightly shifted under the new assessment framework.

Under DepEd Order No. 015, s. 2026 (the new classroom assessment guidelines), a summative test is a formal, teacher-made assessment that measures how much learning has taken place after a set of lessons. It is not the same as the Term Examination, which is a separate, cumulative test given at the end of each term.

In practical terms for Grade 6 teachers, here’s how it works under the Three-Term Calendar:

Assessment Type

When It’s Given

Purpose

Summative Test 1

After first 15 instructional days

Checks mastery of early-term lessons

Summative Test 2

After next 15 instructional days

Monitors growth before the Term Exam

Term Examination

Last week of Instructional Block

Cumulative assessment of the full term

So in a single school year, your Grade 6 learners will take six summative tests (two per term) plus three term examinations. That’s a total of nine major written assessments — and you need quality, validated test items for all of them.

Why the Three-Term Calendar Changes Everything for Grade 6 Assessment

The shift to the Three-Term School Calendar under DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026 isn’t just a scheduling change — it fundamentally reshapes how and when you assess your learners.

Here’s the big picture for SY 2026–2027:

  • School Year Opens: June 8, 2026
  • School Year Ends: April 8, 2027
  • Total Class Days: 201 days

Three-Term Schedule at a Glance

Term

Instructional Period

End-of-Term Block

Term 1

June 15 – September 1, 2026

September 2–15, 2026

Term 2

September 16 – December 4, 2026

December 7–18, 2026

Term 3

January 4 – March 23, 2027

March 24 – April 8, 2027

Under this structure, Grade 6 teachers no longer follow a quarterly assessment rhythm. Instead, each term has its own opening block, instructional block, and end-of-term block — and your summative tests must be timed within the instructional block to be compliant with DepEd’s assessment calendar.

For Term 1, specifically, the first teacher-made summative test is scheduled on July 6, and the second summative test falls on July 28 — making early preparation absolutely critical.
