Socio-Emotional Learning Module DepEd Key Stage 3 (Grades 7–10): Free Download for Teachers

If you teach junior high school, you already know the pattern. A learner who understands the lesson perfectly well still can’t concentrate because of a quarrel with a friend, a mean group chat, or pressure at home. That is exactly why a Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) module for DepEd Key Stage 3 matters.

In this guide, you’ll learn what SEL means for Grades 7 to 10, how it fits DepEd policy and the MATATAG curriculum, and how to use it in your classroom or advisory period. You can download the SEL module for free at the end of this article.

What Is Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

SEL is the process of learning to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions. In plain terms, it’s the set of life skills that helps learners handle school and life.

Most SEL programs worldwide are built on the CASEL framework, which has five competencies:

  1. Self-awareness: recognizing your emotions, strengths, and limits
  2. Self-management: handling stress, impulses, and goals
  3. Social awareness: empathy and respect for diversity
  4. Relationship skills: communication, teamwork, conflict resolution
  5. Responsible decision-making: making safe, ethical, thoughtful choices

The Filipino SEL Competencies

DepEd has also looked at a locally grounded model. The Filipino SEL competency framework, developed by ChildFund Philippines, names six competencies. Here they are, with the closest CASEL match: inquirer

Is SEL Required by DepEd? What the Policies Say

Short answer: SEL is already part of DepEd’s direction, and it’s growing.

  • Early foundation. DepEd Order No. 71, s. 2009 moved to integrate SEL through the values and civics subjects. philstar
  • Learning recovery. DepEd Order No. 34, s. 2022 lists SEL as a focal area of the learning continuity and recovery plan. slideshare
  • Standards for learning materials. DepEd’s SEL guidance expects activities in modules to build learners’ identity and confidence, help them name and regulate emotions, strengthen decision-making and problem-solving, and foster teamwork and social skills.
  • MATATAG. The curriculum names socio-emotional development as one of the areas it develops, alongside values, physical health, and cognitive skills. At Key Stage 3, Values Education is taught from Grades 7 to 10 as a primary subject.
  • Well-being work in progress. DepEd offices have circulated a memo about a team developing a Learner’s Well-Being Framework with indicator metrics (May 2026). Expect more guidance on this, so check deped.gov.ph for the latest issuances.

Teacher’s tip: MATATAG is being rolled out in phases, so which grade levels are already on the revised curriculum depends on the school year and the latest DepEd issuance. Always confirm the current schedule before aligning your lesson plans.

Why SEL Matters So Much in Junior High

  1. Bullying and cyberbullying are real

DepEd logged 7,742 bullying cases in SY 2022-2023, and most involved physical bullying. Those are only the reported cases. SEL gives learners tools for empathy, assertiveness, and asking for help. asianews

  1. Self-management is a common weak point

A 2025 study of public junior high school learners in Manila used the CASEL framework to profile their SEL competencies, and its conclusions point to a need to strengthen competencies such as self-management and responsible decision-making. That matches what many of us see in class: learners who know what’s right but struggle to act on it under pressure.

  1. SEL supports academics

Better emotional regulation means better focus, better group work, and fewer behavior problems. SEL isn’t a replacement for your subject. It makes your subject easier to teach.

What a Good SEL Module for Key Stage 3 Should Include

Before you download or build any SEL module, check it against this list:

  • Clear learning objectives tied to one or more SEL competencies
  • Age-appropriate scenarios for adolescents (social media, peer pressure, family expectations, exams)
  • Short activities (10 to 20 minutes) that fit a homeroom or advisory period
  • Reflection prompts so learners connect the activity to their own lives
  • Filipino context: language, examples, and values learners recognize
  • A simple assessment (rubric, checklist, or reflection journal), not a graded exam
  • Safety notes for teachers on sensitive topics and when to refer to the guidance counselor
  • Easy to print and use with limited resources
