What Is the ILAW Lesson Plan Format? (And Why Grade 2 Week 5 Looks Different From Last Year)

A lot of Grade 2 teachers searching this week are coming from the old DLL or DLP system. Here’s what you need to know before you open any template:

Starting SY 2026–2027, DepEd Order No. 16, s. 2026 officially replaced the Daily Lesson Log (DLL) and Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP) with a single unified format called ILAW. The order was signed on June 4, 2026, and it effectively repeals DepEd Order No. 42, s. 2016, which governed the old formats.

This isn’t just a renamed DLL. The ILAW format asks you to do something the old DLL didn’t always push for: describe your actual learners — their strengths, gaps, interests, and learning barriers — before you plan anything else. That’s the Learner Context section under Intentions, and it’s one of the most important boxes in the whole template.

Also worth noting: the school year now runs in three terms, not four quarters. If you’re used to searching for “Quarter 1 Week 5,” that term no longer applies under DepEd Order No. 09, s. 2026. Term 1 covers what used to be roughly the first and second quarters. Week 5 of Term 1 falls in the second week of July 2026 (approximately July 13–17, 2026).

Why the ILAW Format Matters for Grade 2 Teachers

Grade 2 sits in Key Stage 1 (KS1) of the MATATAG curriculum, which means your assessment approach is different from upper grade levels. Here are things Grade 2 teachers must remember under the new system:

  • No numerical grades for KS1. Instead, you use the PACE Form (Performance and Competency Evaluation Form) to record qualitative evidence of learning progressively.
  • Grading weights (Grades 4–12 only): Written Works 20%, Performance Tasks 50%, ST-TE 30% — this does not apply to Grade 2.
  • Remediation (ARAL): Mark Week 5 on your calendar as the start of targeted remedial interventions for at-risk learners following the first Summative Test.
  • AI Use Declaration: If you used AI to assist in preparing this lesson plan, you are required to declare it per DO No. 3, s. 2026, Annex A.
  • Transition Period: Per Section 23 of DO 16, teachers may still use the old DLL/DLP format until the end of Term 1. Full ILAW compliance is required starting Term 2, SY 2026–2027.

Grade 2 Under the MATATAG Curriculum: What's New in SY 2026–2027

Before we dive into Week 5 specifically, here’s a quick orientation on what’s changed for Grade 2 this school year:

Five Learning Areas (Not Seven)

Under the MATATAG Curriculum, Grade 2 has five learning areas, down from the seven subjects many teachers handled under the old K-12 system:

  1. English
  2. Filipino
  3. Mathematics
  4. Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC)
  5. Makabansa

Note: Mother Tongue has been removed from Grade 2 under MATATAG. If you’re still seeing old templates with Mother Tongue included, those are outdated — don’t use them.

Fewer Competencies, Deeper Mastery

One of the biggest wins of MATATAG is the over 70% reduction in learning competencies compared to the old K-12 curriculum. That means in any given week — including Week 5 — you’re not expected to cover a long list of competencies. You’re expected to go deeper on fewer skills.

Week 5 (approximately July 13–17, 2026) is a pivotal week for Grade 2. By now, the honeymoon phase of the school year is over, and your learners are settling into routines. This is the week to push for deeper engagement — not just review, but genuine application of what they’ve been building since June.

Here’s what each subject area generally covers in Term 1 Week 5 under the MATATAG Budget of Work:

English 2 — Term 1 Week 5

By Week 5, English 2 instruction is typically moving past early phonological awareness and into reading comprehension and vocabulary development.

Key focus areas for Week 5:

  • Identifying details from simple texts (who, what, where, when)
  • Understanding word meaning using picture clues or sentence context
  • Constructing simple sentences about familiar topics
  • Oral language: speaking in complete thoughts about self, family, or community

ILAW Teaching Tips for English 2 Week 5:

In your Learning Experiences section, this is a great week to use shared reading — reading a simple story together as a class, then having learners identify details through questioning. The key is making the comprehension work oral first, then moving to written tasks. Grade 2 learners are still building writing fluency, so prioritize what they can articulate before requiring them to write it.

For your Assessment section, a simple sentence strip matching activity (matching questions to answers from the story) works well as a formative check.

Filipino 2 — Term 1 Week 5

Filipino 2 in Week 5 typically centers on pagbabasa at pag-unawa (reading and comprehension) alongside oral communication.

Key focus areas for Week 5:

  • Pag-unawa sa tekstong binasa (comprehension of a read text)
  • Paggamit ng wastong salita sa pangungusap (using correct words in sentences)
  • Pakikinig at pagsasalita (listening and speaking in Filipino)
  • Pagkilala ng mga salitang magkasingkahulugan o magkasalungat (synonyms/antonyms at this level)

ILAW Teaching Tips for Filipino 2 Week 5:

Filipino and English follow a similar instructional arc this week — both moving toward comprehension-based tasks. A useful classroom strategy is cross-subject text connections: if you read about family in English, continue the family theme in Filipino. Grade 2 learners respond well to thematic consistency.

In your Ways Forward, note whether learners are reading with expression or still decoding word by word — this will guide your Week 6 fluency instruction.

Mathematics 2 — Term 1 Week 5

Mathematics in Term 1 Week 5 is typically deep in number sense and operations — specifically, the properties of addition and early introduction to subtraction concepts, or further work on place value depending on your BOW pacing.

Key focus areas for Week 5:

  • Addition of 2- to 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping
  • Problem solving using addition in real-life contexts
  • Introduction of the concept of subtraction as “taking away” or “comparing”
  • Place value: understanding tens and ones up to 1,000

Sample Problem Context (Filipino Learner-Centered):

Si Ana ay may 34 na crayons. Nagbigay siya ng 12 kay Ben. Ilan na ang natitira kay Ana?

Using local names and familiar situations in your Math word problems makes the content more meaningful for Grade 2 learners — and it aligns with the MATATAG principle of contextualized, relevant learning.

ILAW Teaching Tips for Math 2 Week 5:

In your Learning Experiences section, use manipulatives — bundling sticks, base-ten blocks, or even bottle caps — before moving to abstract number representations. The ILAW format gives you space to plan concrete → representational → abstract (CRA) learning sequences. Use that space intentionally.

For Assessment, a 3-item exit ticket at the end of each session is enough for Week 5. Keep it short; what you want to see is whether learners can solve with or without manipulatives.

GMRC 2 (Good Manners and Right Conduct) — Term 1 Week 5

GMRC in Week 5 typically focuses on values in the community — expanding the learner’s understanding of relationships beyond family into school and neighborhood contexts.

Key focus areas for Week 5:

  • Respecting others in the community (classmates, teachers, community helpers)
  • Expressing feelings appropriately
  • Understanding rules and why we follow them
  • Practicing simple acts of kindness and cooperation

ILAW Teaching Tips for GMRC 2 Week 5:

GMRC is one of the subjects where your Learner Context section matters most. What values issues are you actually seeing in your classroom by Week 5? Learners being unkind during group work? Difficulty taking turns? Put that in your Intentions section — your GMRC lesson should respond to your real class, not a generic scenario.

For Learning Experiences, role-playing and storytelling are your best tools. A short scenario like “Ano ang gagawin mo kung makikita mong nag-iiyak ang iyong kaklase?” gets learners thinking and talking in ways that written worksheets simply don’t.

Makabansa 2 — Term 1 Week 5

Makabansa (which replaced Araling Panlipunan at the primary level under MATATAG) focuses in Term 1 on the learner’s identity, family, school, and community.

Key focus areas for Week 5:

  • Understanding one’s role in the family and community
  • Recognizing community helpers and their contributions
  • Developing a sense of Filipino identity and pride
  • Basic map awareness: school, home, and community

ILAW Teaching Tips for Makabansa 2 Week 5:

Week 5 is a great time to do a community mapping activity — have learners draw or describe the path from their home to school. This integrates spatial thinking, vocabulary development, and identity formation in one activity. It also gives you rich Learner Context data: you’ll see which learners have strong verbal description skills and which ones need more scaffolding.

  3. Keep your Ways Forward section meaningful — A generic “continue with the next lesson” won’t help you or your learners. Be specific about what you observed and what you’ll change.
  4. Connect with your co-teachers — The ILAW framework works best when discussed in LAC (Learning Action Cell) sessions. Share what worked in your class this week.
  5. Prepare your learners for Summative Test 1 — Spend part of Day 5 reviewing key competencies from Weeks 1–4 so learners are confident, not anxious.
