What is a module for Grade 1?

A module for Grade 1 is a Self-Learning Module (SLM) developed by the Department of Education (DepEd) Philippines. These are structured instructional materials designed to help Grade 1 learners study independently — whether at home, during class suspensions, or as supplementary classroom materials.

Under the new MATATAG Curriculum, Grade 1 modules have been updated to align with revised learning competencies that are age-appropriate, focused, and built on a strong foundation of basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Module for Grade 1 Math

The module for Grade 1 Math under MATATAG covers foundational numeracy concepts, including:

Module for Grade 1 Filipino

The Grade 1 Filipino module focuses on early language development. Key learning areas include phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, oral communication, and basic writing skills in Filipino. These modules follow the Science of Reading approach embedded in the MATATAG Curriculum’s Language, Reading, and Literacy (LRL) component.

Module for Grade 1 English

Module for Grade 1 GMRC

GMRC, or Good Manners and Right Conduct, refers to the specific and generally accepted basic social values, etiquette, and proper behaviors that express respect for the people one interacts with. It is a core subject in the Philippine Basic Education Program mandated by Republic Act No. 11476, the GMRC and Values Education Act. The primary objective of implementing GMRC in schools is to cultivate ideals of acceptance and tolerance, and to develop ethical and moral decision-making skills.

GMRC is anchored on Personalism and Virtue Ethics — the idea that having and practicing good habits makes a person better, and that children should be trained in virtue and good behavior from an early age.

Module for Grade 1 Makabansa

What is Makabansa?
Makabansa is not simply a name change from Araling Panlipunan or Values Education — it is an integrated learning area within the MATATAG Curriculum that brings together key ideas for becoming an active and responsible citizen, pulling together history, geography, and citizenship into one area.
Makabansa is described as a “super-subject” that combines Social Studies, Culture, and Arts. Its name literally means “patriotism” or “love of country,” and it is one of the four pillars of the MATATAG Curriculum alongside Makatao, Mahahasa, and Matatag.

For Grade 1, the focus begins with the child’s immediate environment — self-awareness, family, and school — expanding to the local community, and introducing basic national symbols and simple stories of Philippine heroes.

Module for Grade 1 MAPEH

What is MAPEH in Grade 1?
In Key Stage 1, MAPEH seamlessly integrates the foundational knowledge and skills of Music, Arts, PE, and Health. Basic concepts on the properties of sound and elements of arts are explored, which serve as the foundation for more complex learning in later grade levels.
It is important to note that under MATATAG, MAPEH as a standalone subject is formally taught from Grades 4 to 6 onward. In Grade 1, the Music, Arts, PE, and Health components are integrated within Makabansa and other learning areas rather than listed as a separate subject. However, all four components are still actively taught.

Arts and Physical Education in Grade 1 allows each child to develop motor skills and promotes creative expression. This area includes music, drawing and painting, dance, and physical activities to develop coordination, fitness, and teamwork.
