What Is the ILAW Lesson Plan Framework?

Before diving into the Week 5 files, it helps to understand what the ILAW format actually is — especially if you’re still getting familiar with it.

The ILAW Lesson Plan is DepEd’s new single-format lesson plan that replaces both the old Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP) and the Daily Lesson Log (DLL). It was introduced under DepEd Order No. 16, s. 2026, effective for School Year 2026–2027, and is guided by eight evidence-based Learning Design Principles. Depedlibre

The word ILAW is an acronym that stands for four key components of every lesson:

Component

What It Means

I — Intentions

The learning goal or competency for the session

L — Learning Experience

The activities that will help learners achieve the goal

A — Assessing Learning

How the teacher checks whether learners understood

W — Ways Forward

What happens next — remediation, enrichment, or moving on

The key is alignment. The objective, activity, assessment, and next step should all work together. The DepEd lesson plan components become more useful when they reflect real teaching decisions. DepEd

One more important thing to note: unlike the old DLP, the ILAW template encourages teachers to map learning across multiple sessions — for example, Session 1 on vocabulary, Session 2 on reading comprehension, and Session 3 on writing. This makes lesson planning feel more like real teaching rather than a box-checking exercise. Depedlibre

Where Does Week 5 Fall in the Three-Term School Calendar?

Under the new DepEd three-term school calendar for SY 2026–2027, the school year is divided into three terms instead of the traditional four quarters. Here is how Term 1 breaks down:

Week

Dates

Notes

Week 1

June 15–19, 2026

Week 2

June 22–26, 2026

Foundation building

Week 3

Week 4

July 6–10, 2026

Week 5

Week 6 onwards

Deepening and performance tasks

Term 1 Week 5 is a critical instructional week. By this point, teachers should already have a clear picture of which learners need remediation and which ones are ready for enrichment. Your DLL this week should reflect those insights — and the ILAW format is specifically designed to help you do exactly that through the Ways Forward section.

Why Grade 4 ILAW Lesson Plans Require Special Attention

Grade 4 is a transition year. Learners are no longer in the primary grades, but they haven’t fully settled into the intermediate level either. This means your lesson plans need to bridge the gap between basic and higher-order thinking.

The Grade 4 Term 1 competencies emphasize literacy, numeracy, communication, values formation, cultural awareness, scientific inquiry, digital responsibility, and practical life skills.

At the same time, since Grade 4 learners are already developing stronger reading, writing, reasoning, and problem-solving skills, the DLL should help teachers provide activities that encourage participation and deeper understanding. DepEd

Here are some classroom strategies that work especially well for Grade 4 ILAW lesson plans in Week 5:

  • Guided reading with comprehension questions — especially for Filipino and English
  • Collaborative problem-solving — works great for Math and Science
  • Think-Pair-Share — keeps learners active and builds communication skills
  • Short formative quizzes or exit tickets — a quick way to check understanding before moving to the Ways Forward step
  • Community-connected examples — helps learners relate lessons to real life, which aligns with the MATATAG curriculum’s emphasis on contextualized learning
