What Learning Areas Are Covered in Grade 1 Term 2 Lesson Exemplars?

The Grade 1 curriculum under MATATAG covers the following learning areas in Term 2:

  1. Language (English)

Grade 1 Language in Term 2 builds on the foundational literacy skills introduced in Term 1. Learners move deeper into:

  • Decoding and phonics — applying letter-sound relationships in longer words and sentences
  • Vocabulary development — expanding sight words and high-frequency word recognition
  • Reading comprehension — understanding short narratives and simple informational texts
  • Oral language — retelling stories, expressing ideas clearly, and participating in structured discussions
  • Writing — forming sentences and writing short responses
  1. Filipino

Filipino in Term 2 continues to develop foundational literacy in the national language:

  • Pagbabasa ng mga salita at pangungusap — decoding words and sentences with accuracy
  • Talasalitaan — vocabulary enrichment using context clues
  • Pakikinig at pagsasalita — guided listening and speaking activities
  • Pagsulat — forming words and short sentences in Filipino
  1. Mathematics

Grade 1 Math in Term 2 progresses from simple counting and number recognition to more complex number concepts, including:

  • Addition and subtraction — extending basic operations to larger numbers
  • Place value — understanding tens and ones
  • Measurement — exploring non-standard and standard units of length, mass, and capacity
  • Geometry — identifying and describing shapes in the environment
  • Data and problem-solving — reading simple charts and solving one-step word problems
  1. GMRC (Good Manners and Right Conduct)

Term 2 GMRC lessons help Grade 1 learners develop:

  • Respecting others — understanding how to treat classmates, teachers, and family members
  • Responsibility — taking care of personal belongings and school property
  • Honesty and fairness — practicing truthfulness in daily activities
  • Community awareness — recognizing one’s role in the home, school, and community
  1. Makabansa

Makabansa integrates social studies, arts, PE, and health — and in Term 2, Grade 1 learners explore:

  • Family and community roles
  • Philippine culture, traditions, and national symbols
  • Health habits and personal well-being
  • Physical movement and coordination through PE activities
  • Creative expression through arts and crafts

What's Inside a Grade 1 Term 2 Lesson Exemplar File?

Each Lesson Exemplar document follows a consistent DepEd-approved structure designed for clarity and ease of use:

  1. Curriculum Content, Content Standards, and Performance Standards — defines what learners should know, understand, and be able to do
  2. Learning Competencies and Objectives — specific, measurable goals per lesson session
  3. Content — the subject matter for the lesson
  4. Learning Resources — materials, references, and tools needed
  5. Procedures / Instructional Flow — the actual step-by-step teaching sequence:
    • Before the Lesson (review, motivation, activating prior knowledge)
    • During the Lesson (presentation, discussion, guided practice)
    • After the Lesson (assessment, synthesis, agreement/assignment)
  6. Remarks and Reflection — space for the teacher to record notes on lesson delivery and learner performance

Teacher Tip: Even if you’re an experienced Grade 1 teacher, reviewing the instructional flow section of the LE before class helps you anticipate where learners might need extra support — especially for new competencies introduced in Term 2.

How Grade 1 Term 2 Lessons Build on Term 1

One thing that distinguishes the MATATAG curriculum’s lesson design is its spiral progression — concepts are introduced in simpler form in Term 1 and revisited with greater complexity in Term 2 and beyond.

Here’s a quick look at how that progression plays out:

Learning Area

Term 1 Focus

Term 2 Progression

Language

Letter sounds, simple CVC words

Blended sounds, sight words, short texts

Filipino

Basic salita, sariling pangalan

Pangungusap, mas mahahabang teksto

Math

Addition/subtraction, place value, measurement

GMRC

Responsibility, honesty, community values

Makabansa

Understanding this progression helps you use the Term 2 LEs more effectively — you’ll know which Term 1 competencies to briefly review before diving into new content.

Frequently Asked Questions About Grade 1 Lesson Exemplars

Q: Are these Lesson Exemplars officially from DepEd? Yes. Lesson Exemplars are official learning resources developed or endorsed by the Department of Education in support of the MATATAG K to 10 Curriculum implementation. They are intended for use by teachers in public elementary schools.

Q: Are the Term 2 Lesson Exemplars different from the old Quarter 2 materials? Yes — they are not the same. The three-term calendar is a new structure. Term 2 has its own specific competency coverage that does not directly correspond to the old Quarter 2 materials. Do not mix old and new materials.

Q: Can I adapt the Lesson Exemplars to suit my class? Absolutely. Lesson Exemplars are models — not scripts. You’re encouraged to adapt the activities, examples, and assessment tasks to fit your learners’ needs, local context, and available resources.

Q: Do I need to submit these as is to my school head? Not necessarily. Check your school’s policy. Many schools require teachers to use the LE as a basis and may ask for a filled-out lesson plan format. Always coordinate with your school head or master teacher.

Q: What file format are the Lesson Exemplars available in? Most DepEd Lesson Exemplars are released in PDF format. Some are also available in editable Word document (.docx) format, making it easier to customize for your class.
