What Is the ILAW Lesson Plan Format?
If you’re still getting used to the new format, here’s a quick refresher. The ILAW lesson plan is the official instructional planning framework introduced by DepEd through DepEd Order No. 16, s. 2026 (also referenced in DO No. 009, s. 2026 on the Three-Term School Calendar). It replaces the old Daily Lesson Log (DLL) and Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP).
ILAW stands for:
Letter | Component | What It Means |
I | Intentions | Learning competency, content standards, performance standards, and specific learning objectives for the session |
L | Learning Experiences | All planned teaching-learning activities — from motivation/hook to exploration and application |
A | Assessment | Formative and summative checks that verify whether learners achieved the intended outcomes |
W | Ways Forward | Teacher reflection, remediation plans, enrichment activities, and next steps |
“The ILAW format is a simplified, learner-centered framework that ensures every lesson is purposeful, assessable, and responsive to actual classroom realities.” — DepEd Order No. 16, s. 2026
Think of ILAW not just as paperwork — it’s a teaching mindset. Every section pushes you to think about why you’re teaching something, how students will experience it, whether they’re getting it, and what you’ll do next.
Why the ILAW Format Matters for Grade 2 Teachers
Grade 2 sits in Key Stage 1 (KS1) of the MATATAG curriculum, which means your assessment approach is different from upper grade levels. Here are things Grade 2 teachers must remember under the new system:
- No numerical grades for KS1. Instead, you use the PACE Form (Performance and Competency Evaluation Form) to record qualitative evidence of learning progressively.
- Grading weights (Grades 4–12 only): Written Works 20%, Performance Tasks 50%, ST-TE 30% — this does not apply to Grade 2.
- Remediation (ARAL): Mark Week 5 on your calendar as the start of targeted remedial interventions for at-risk learners following the first Summative Test.
- AI Use Declaration: If you used AI to assist in preparing this lesson plan, you are required to declare it per DO No. 3, s. 2026, Annex A.
- Transition Period: Per Section 23 of DO 16, teachers may still use the old DLL/DLP format until the end of Term 1. Full ILAW compliance is required starting Term 2, SY 2026–2027.
Three-Term School Calendar: Where Does Term 1, Week 4 Fall?
Understanding the three-term structure helps you pace your instruction correctly. Here’s a quick overview:
DepEd Three-Term School Calendar SY 2026–2027
Term | Coverage | Key Milestones |
Term 1 | June – August 2026 | Opening, Instruction, Summative Test 1 (Week 5) |
Term 2 | September – November 2026 | Full ILAW compliance begins; Summative Test 2 |
Term 3 | January – March 2027 | Year-end assessments, Awards and Recognition |
Term 1, Week 4 falls on July 6–10, 2026. This is one of the most critical weeks of Term 1 — you’re in the heart of instruction, competencies are deepening, and Summative Test 1 is just around the corner in Week 5. This is the week to consolidate learning, check for gaps, and make sure your Ways Forward section is already pointing toward remediation if needed.

How to Fill Out Each ILAW Section for Grade 2
Here is a practical, section-by-section guide tailored for Grade 2 teachers — because generic templates don’t always cut it when you’re dealing with 7–8 year olds.
I — Intentions
This is where you establish your “north star” for the lesson. For Grade 2, keep it concrete and observable.
What to write:
- Copy the exact learning competency from the MATATAG Three-Term Budget of Work (BOW) for the specific subject and week.
- Write 2–3 learning objectives using action verbs appropriate to the learner level: identify, match, arrange, draw, retell, count, compare.
- Avoid abstract verbs like “understand” or “appreciate” — they’re hard to observe and assess.
Example (Mathematics):
- Competency: The learner adds and subtracts whole numbers with sums and minuends up to 1,000 with and without regrouping.
- Objectives:
- Add two-digit numbers with regrouping using concrete materials.
- Subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping using pictorial representations.
- Solve simple word problems involving addition and subtraction with regrouping.
L — Learning Experiences
This is the heart of the ILAW plan — your actual lesson flow. For Grade 2, structure your learning experiences using the Explore–Firm Up–Deepen–Transfer progression or a similar learner-centered sequence.
Recommended flow for Grade 2:
- Motivation/Hook (5–10 mins) — A song, game, picture puzzle, or real-object activity that activates prior knowledge and captures attention. Grade 2 learners respond incredibly well to movement and visual cues.
- Presentation/Exploration (15–20 mins) — Introduce new concepts using manipulatives, charts, big books, or realia. Model the process explicitly.
- Guided Practice (10–15 mins) — Work through examples together as a class. Think-pair-share works beautifully here.
- Independent Practice (10–15 mins) — Seat work or group task where learners apply the concept on their own or in small groups.
- Closure/Synthesis (5 mins) — Quick summary, exit ticket, or “3-2-1” reflection appropriate for the age group.
Remember: Grade 2 learners have an attention span of roughly 15–20 minutes for focused tasks. Break up activities, mix modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), and keep transitions brisk.
A — Assessment
For KS1 (Grades 1–3), formative assessment is your main tool. Summative assessments exist but must be recorded qualitatively using the PACE Form.
Formative assessment ideas for Grade 2:
- Thumbs up / thumbs down / thumbs sideways
- Mini whiteboards or show-me cards
- Exit slips with a single question
- Observation checklists during group work
- Oral questioning with random learner selection
For your PACE Form entries this week, document:
- Which learners demonstrated mastery of the competency
- Which learners need follow-up (flag for ARAL in Week 5)
- Anecdotal notes on exceptional performance or persistent difficulties
W — Ways Forward
This is your reflection and next-step section — and it should never be left blank or generic. Think of it as a brief professional conversation with your future self.
Ways Forward should include:
- Teacher Reflection — What worked? What didn’t? Were the learning experiences engaging and appropriate for your class?
- Remediation Plan — Which learners need additional support? What specific competency gaps did you observe? (This feeds directly into Week 5 ARAL.)
- Enrichment — What extension tasks can you offer to learners who mastered the competency early?
- Adjustments for Next Lesson — How will this week’s outcomes shape your Week 5 plan?
Your Teacher Reflection in Ways Forward should directly inform your next week’s lesson plan. — ILAW Framework Guidance

Frequently Asked Questions About ILAW Lesson Plans for Grade 2
Q: Do I still need to submit the old DLL format?
A: Per Section 23 of DO 16, s. 2026, you may still use the old DLL or DLP format until the end of Term 1. However, full ILAW compliance is mandatory starting Term 2. Transition now to avoid the rush.
Q: How many sessions should I plan per week in Grade 2?
A: This depends on your class schedule per subject. MAPEH, for example, typically covers all four components (Music, Arts, PE, Health) across the week’s sessions.
Q: Can I use AI to generate my ILAW lesson plan?
A: Yes, but you must include an AI Use Declaration in your lesson plan as required by DO No. 3, s. 2026 (Annex A). You are also expected to review, contextualize, and adapt any AI-generated content to your actual learners. The professional responsibility remains yours.
Q: Where can I download the official MATATAG Budget of Work for Term 1?
A: The official Budget of Work (BOW) for the Three-Term School Calendar is available through the DepEd Learning Area portals. You can also access it through your school’s Learning Area Coordinator.
Q: Is there a rubric for evaluating ILAW lesson plans?
A: Yes. DepEd has released a Rubric for Lesson Planning with Sample Response Bank that guides teachers in completing the reflection and evaluation portions of the ILAW plan. Check DepEd Club and your division office for access.

Final Tips for Grade 2 Teachers This Week 4
As you wrap up Week 4 and head into the crucial Week 5 (Summative Test week), here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Review your PACE Form entries — Make sure all qualitative observations are recorded before Week 5. Don’t leave it all to the last minute.
- Identify your ARAL candidates now — Use your Ways Forward section from this week’s ILAW to pre-identify learners who will need remediation starting Week 5.
- Keep your Ways Forward section meaningful — A generic “continue with the next lesson” won’t help you or your learners. Be specific about what you observed and what you’ll change.
- Connect with your co-teachers — The ILAW framework works best when discussed in LAC (Learning Action Cell) sessions. Share what worked in your class this week.
- Prepare your learners for Summative Test 1 — Spend part of Day 5 reviewing key competencies from Weeks 1–4 so learners are confident, not anxious.
